CREATING LOCAL JOBS – NT GAS STRATEGY REVEALED

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner today outlined a Five Point NT Gas Strategy at the South East Asia Australia Offshore and Onshore Conference in Darwin, as part of NT Resources Week.

The Strategy will drive Government’s vision for the Territory as a world class hub for gas production, manufacturing and services by 2030.

The Strategy includes five achievable targets:

  1. Get more LNG in Darwin and expand Darwin’s LNG Export Hub.
  2. Grow the gas supply and service industry
  3. Establish a gas manufacturing industry
  4. Grow research, innovation and training capacity and;
  5. Contribute to national energy security on the East Coast.

To implement the Strategy, Chief Minister Gunner has re-established the NT Gas Task Force – disbanded by the previous CLP government – and appointed the highly respected Paul Tyrell as its Chair.

Fundamental to the Strategy is the establishment of a gas manufacturing industry, a ‘downstream’, value add industry in the Territory to create jobs and drive population growth.

The Territory Labor Government recently released its 2018 – 2028 Population Growth Strategy, with a goal to return the Territory’s population to historical averages, supported by a new masterbrand The Territory – Boundless Possible which tells the modern Territory story of opportunity.

"Our Five Point NT Gas Strategy will create jobs through exploration, production, supply, export, manufacturing, research and innovation.

"There is enormous opportunity in the Territory for the diversification of the gas industry, which will create many hundreds of local jobs.
